Laverne Ruth Chariton 81
Laverne Ruth Chariton, 81, Dalton Gardens, died February 2, 2010 at the home of her son in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho where she was under Hospice care with terminal reoccurring breast cancer. She passed away peacefully without pain with family members present.

She was born August 11, 1928 in Temvik, North Dakota to Otto and Louise (Schmidt) Schenkenberger. Laverne’s family moved to Dalton Gardens when she was 10 years old and she graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School in 1946. She also attended North Idaho Junior College where she studied Business. In 1947 she married her High School sweetheart, Cecil Chariton after his return from Naval Service in the Pacific during World War II. They were married for 52 years before Cecil’s passing in 2000. They lived in Coeur d'Alene until 1964 when they built a new home in Dalton Gardens. She worked as a bookkeeper for Cope Electric and then Montgomery Ward’s for many years. She will be best remembered for her knowledge of wild mushrooms and mycology. She was a founding member of the North Idaho Mycological Association and authored an identification Key for the Agaricus Mushroom. She also worked with Cecil in their business “Sundance Gems” in which they dug, polished and sold Idaho star garnets.
She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church but was recently attending Coeur d'Alene Bible Church.

She is survived by older sister, Irene Hoffman and younger brother, Roy Schenkenberger. She is also survived by son Larry & Sylvia Chariton of Boise, son Les and Brooke Chariton of Coeur d'Alene and daughter Kathy and Steve Bostwick of Hayward, California, 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grand children.

A visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Monday, February 8th at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel. Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Tuesday, February 9th at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel with Bishop Randy Priebe officiating. A luncheon will follow at Yates Hayden Chapel Gathering Center. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice of North Idaho.
