Mary Lou Kane, age 69, of Coeur d’Alene passed away peacefully at her home Sunday, May 13, 2007. She was born February 6, 1938 in Dover, Idaho to Arthur and Mary (Conniff) Hanson. The family moved from Dover to Camby, CA when she was 7 years old and returned to the Coeur d’Alene area where she graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1955 at the age of 16. She married Tom Kane on April 25, 1960 and they remained married for 25 years, divorced, and united again in 1992, being constant companions since that time. Tom was at her bedside on her passing after a four and one-half year brave battle with cancer.

Mary Lou was employed by Jensen Bird Hardware Co., Spokane, WA, and Idaho First National Bank, 4th Street Branch in Coeur d’Alene, where she was known for her speed and efficiency. In her later years she worked for Ponderosa Elementary School where her grandchildren attended.

She was a homemaker for many years raising three young boys who were her pride and joy. As a young mother she was responsible for the erection of a baseball backstop on the vacant lot next door and supervised many fun activities for her sons and neighborhood kids as well as being the Cub Scout troop den mother. She had a keen interest in local and international politics. She was an active member of the Democratic Party in Coeur d’Alene and was known for her strong opinions. Seldom would she hesitate to participate in a healthy political debate. Anyone brave enough to engage her in conversation on this matter would often try to change the topic. Mary Lou labored arduously carrying petitions to raise support for the preservation of Tubb’s Hill and keeping Sander’s Beach public. She was instrumental in forming “Save Our Shores”, the precursor of the present day Kootenai Environmental Alliance.

Mary Lou enjoyed sewing, planting flowers, working on her house and restoring antique furniture, but was particularly fond of spending time on area lakes fishing with her husband, Tom. The majority of her adult life was spent being a great mom and watching literally thousands of football, baseball and basketball games. If you couldn’t see her in the stands, you could usually hear her cheering and supporting her sons or grandchildren. Our memories of Mary Lou will be cherished forever. She will be fondly remembered by many including the “Gabby Girls” with whom she played cards on Fridays.

She was preceded in death by her parents and the tragic loss of her son, John Kane, in August of 2005. Mary Lou is survived by her husband, Tom Kane; two sons, Jim Kane and wife, Tammy of Post Falls, and Justin Kane and wife, Angie of Hayden Lake; a brother, Robert Hanson and wife, Pat of Stevenson, WA; daughter-in-law, Kim Kane of Coeur d’Alene; grandchildren, Matthew and Megan Kane, Nathan, Brennan, Whitney and Halle Kane, and J and Lina Kane; plus numerous loving relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be 4:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at the Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d’Alene Chapel.
